BITTER CROP - Martin Luther King

On January 19, many will celebrate and honor the life of Civil Rights Activist Dr. Martin Luther King.
My painting will take part of this celebration in Cincinnati...

Ce 19 janvier, aux Etats-Unis, beaucoup vont célébrer la vie et l'oeuvre en faveur des droits civils, du Dr Martin Luther King.
Ma peinture, réalisée à cette occasion , participera à l'évènement dans la ville de Cincinnati.

 Voici les paroles de la chanson de Billie Holiday qui m'ont inspiré cette peinture:
(dénonçant le lynchage et la pendaison en 1930 de deux frères afro-américains en raison de leur couleur de peau)

Strange Fruit  (Abel Meeropol)

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,

Here is a strange and bitter crop.
